My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

"Baker's Morning"

By OracleMask

Outside, the coming dawn was barely a twinkle in the moon's eye.  But in one shop, the lights were already on as a perky pink pony was clattering around and preparing for the day.  Happily humming as she worked, she measured out cups of flour from different bags.  All-purpose didn't always mean all purpose: you needed wheat and cake flour too.  Then there was the sugar, the salt, the eggs, the water, the vegetable oil, the milk, and the butter...one bowl had yeast, with some warm water and just a pinch of sugar to get it started.

On another counter were all the extra goodies: strawberries, blueberries, bananas, oranges, chocolate, walnuts, delicious spices, and even more sugar.  Back when Pinkie was still learning how to bake with the Cakes, all those goodies would have been a too-temptalicious buffet.  Now, she was a worldly and mature mare who could wait for everything to be baked first...and then she would leap in and devour any tasty leftover treats that got in her way.

Finally, everything was set out.  A quick check of the yeast showed it had a happy full tummy.

“Okie dokie lokie!  Time to get started,” Pinkie Pie said.

Humming quietly to herself, Pinkie began mixing.  Cup after cup of flour went into large mixing bowls.  After the flour came the rest: some of the yeast, the milk, eggs, oil and butter, and of course some salt and the sugar!  Once all the ingredients were together, it was time for the fun part: Pinkie dumped the gooey mixture on the flour-coated counter and started kneading.

Knead this dough, knead this dough, one two three four~” Pinkie sang to herself.

After enough kneading and liberal application of more flour when needed, the gooey mess changed into a good, sticky dough.  Now Pinkie separated the dough into a dozen little round balls, putting them on a tray under a large, damp cloth so the loaves could get to work rising.  While the bread thought about itself for a while, Pinkie was already working on the next batches: first a yummy honey one, then a healthy oat one, next a tasty soda one (not one with actual soda pop in it sadly, Pinkie was still working on that variation of the recipe), and then a crunchy nutty one.

Pinkie had just finished setting the nut bread to rise when it was time to check on the first batch of bread.

Ooh, smelled like the yeast was happy, and that meant this was a happy bread for happy, hungry ponies!  Pinkie moved the loaves to their baking tray, and slid it into the big oven.

No time to sit and wait on the bread baking, though!  There were lots of other tasty breakfast foods in need of baking!  Pinkie got to work mixing even more flour with more eggs, more sugar, and even more nuts and honey and spices and all sorts of other yummy things.  Muffin batter was soon poured, cinnamon rolls were rolled up, and sugar was sprinkled over scones before the goodies popped into the smaller ovens one-by-one.

Whew!  Baking was toasty work!  Pinkie paused to take a drink of water, before the smell of fresh bread lured her back to the big oven.  Quickly and carefully, the loaves were pulled out before they could start burning.  Seeing they were all crispy-coated and golden, Pinkie set them out on the cooling rack and went to put in the next batch of bread.

All that yummy bread didn't stay put for long: as soon as it was cool enough, the bread moved off the cooling racks, to make way for more bread, delicious muffins, even more bread, sensational cinnamon rolls, sweet scones, and even more bread after that!  Anypony who would've peeked in the window might've wondered who the pink blur was as Pinkie dashed from bowl to oven to tray and back again: a perfectly timed twitch now and then, plus plenty of baking experience, meant that everything she pulled from the oven was done just right!  Sugarcube Corner began filling with the heavenly smell of baking, the scent pouring into every nook and cranny.

Just as the sunrise was starting – a sparkling in the air in the direction of Canterlot, as always – Pinkie heard hoofsteps on the stairs.  Mr. and Mrs. Cake trotted into the kitchen, Mr. Cake still yawning.

“Good morning!” Pinkie exclaimed, hopping over for a moment and greeting the Cakes with a big Pinkie hug – before dashing back to the big oven and pulling out another dozen loaves of bread.

“Oh Pinkie, everything smells lovely,” Mrs. Cake said, sniffing the air and smiling.

“I'll start getting the front ready,” Mr. Cake said, sniffing appreciatively himself, “Dear, will you help Pinkie get all these to the counter?”

“Of course,” Mrs. Cake said, “We've got a lot of work to do if we're going to feed all those hungry ponies today.”

“Okie dokie lokie!”

Balancing a large tray of muffins on her head, and an equally large tray of scones on her rump, Pinkie Pie pushed the little wheeled cart that Mrs. Cake loaded up with all the bread through the door that connected the kitchen to the front of the store.  Not long now before the first of the hungry bellies came a-calling!
Pinkie Pie starts her day as all bakers do: in the kitchen before the dawn, hard at work making the fresh bread and tasty breakfast foods that hungry ponies need to start the day.

This is set at least a year before 'Baby Cakes'. Yes, even with Pinkie Pie singing that song~ ;D
